One tells you what you did wrong; the other tells you that you're the problem.
Micro-habits to get started
Small actions of a few minutes to start this habit:
What I did or what I am?
Ask which of the two is hurting. The answer is usually immediate.
Naming an emotion already reduces its intensity.
2 minRewrite the sentence
Swap "to be" for an action verb: "I'm a disaster" → "I arrived late and didn't warn anyone".
The second sentence is more precise and, crucially, actionable.
3 minFind the repair
Identify a specific apology, a fix, or a change for next time.
If you find the action, you've left shame and entered guilt.
