Tackle what you avoid talking about

Stop postponing difficult conversations: hold them by creating safety instead of avoiding them or blowing up.

Micro-habits to get started

Small actions of a few minutes to start this habit:

Separate the fact from your story

Before talking, distinguish what happened (the fact) from the interpretation you've placed on it.

'You arrived late' is a fact; 'you don't care about me' is a story you added.

Start with the shared purpose

Open the conversation by making clear you're looking for a solution for both of you, not to win.

People only open up and listen when they feel safe.

Speak from yourself and ask

Use the first person ('I felt...') and ask for the other person's version with genuine curiosity.

Talking about your experience, rather than the other person's flaws, lowers defenses.
