Modulate your voice

Back to Explore Habits
Practice the melody of your voice — pitch, rhythm and emphasis — so you stop sounding monotone and speak with relief.
Micro-habits to get started
Small actions of a few minutes to start this habit:
Read with exaggerated melody
Read a text aloud, taking pitch to the extreme: very high, very low, very fast, very slow.
Exaggerating in practice means your natural delivery already has more relief.
3 minFinish firmly
Practice saying statements with a clear downward pitch at the end, instead of rising as if you were asking a question.
Ending downward adds authority; ending upward sounds unsure.
2 minHighlight the key word
In an important sentence, pick the most relevant word and emphasize it with pitch or a micro-pause before it.
A sentence without emphasis is a sentence without direction.
