Introduction

Nobody taught us how to think. We learned mathematics, history and grammar, but not the mental tools for understanding a complex world and making good decisions within it. The result is that we often face new problems with a single hammer, and we know how that goes: to someone with only a hammer, everything looks like a nail.

Mental models are precisely that set of tools: ways of understanding how reality works that you can apply to think more clearly. The more of them you have and the better you know how to use them, the better the decisions you'll make. This article explains what they are and presents some of the most useful ones.

What a mental model is

A mental model is a simplified representation of how something in the world works: an idea, a principle or a pattern that helps you interpret situations and anticipate consequences. Supply and demand is a mental model; so are evolution, compound interest and critical mass.

None of them describes reality completely — they're all simplifications — but each illuminates a part. The key, as investor Charlie Munger popularized, isn't mastering one, but building a toolbox of models from different disciplines and knowing which to apply in each case. Thinking well is, to a large extent, having several models and not forcing every problem through a single one.

Models for making better decisions

Some of the most practical for everyday life:

  • Second-order thinking. Don't stop at the first consequence ("and then what?"). Many decisions look good in their immediate effect and bad in their later ones. Asking yourself "and after that, what will happen?" separates you from someone who only sees the first step.
  • Inversion. Instead of only asking how to achieve something, ask how you'd ruin it, and then avoid that. Sometimes it's easier to identify the mistakes to avoid than the perfect path. To have a good life, start by listing how you'd have a bad one and don't do that.
  • Opportunity cost. Every "yes" to something is a "no" to everything else you could do with that time or money. The real question isn't "is this good?", but "is it the best I can do with this resource?".
  • Circle of competence. Be clear about what you genuinely know and what you don't. The worst decisions are usually made outside one's circle of competence, believing we know more than we do. Recognizing the limits of your knowledge is an advantage, not a weakness.

Models for understanding reality

Others help you interpret the world better and avoid errors of judgment:

  • Proximate vs. ultimate causes. The proximate cause is the immediate, visible one; the ultimate cause is the deep one that genuinely explains the problem. Attacking only the proximate cause (the symptom) leaves the root intact. Always ask about the cause of the cause.
  • Systems and feedback. Many things aren't straight lines, but systems where an action provokes reactions that feed back. In a system, the obvious solution sometimes makes the problem worse. Thinking in loops, not arrows, avoids surprises.
  • Black swans and risk management. Rare, unpredictable events, however unlikely, can have an enormous impact. That's why it's wise to protect yourself against the catastrophic even when it seems improbable, instead of optimizing only for the normal scenario.
  • The map is not the territory. Every idea about reality is a map, not reality itself. When the map and the terrain don't match, the terrain wins. Keep your models as provisional tools, not as absolute truths.

How to start using them

You don't need to memorize hundreds. Mastering a few and genuinely applying them already gains you a lot:

1. Faced with a decision, use two or three models, not one. Look at the problem through second-order thinking, opportunity cost and inversion, for example. 2. Ask yourself what you're missing. Each model illuminates a part; change the lens to see the blind spots. 3. Collect models little by little. Every time you understand a powerful principle from any discipline, store it in your mental toolbox.
