Introduction

The scale is the worst instrument for evaluating a change in your body and the one most people use as their only reference. It goes up two kilos in a week and the wrong conclusion follows; it drops one and the opposite conclusion follows. Neither reading describes what happened.

You don't need a laboratory to measure well. You need three cheap instruments, used with a consistent method, and the willingness to look at trends instead of readings.

No home instrument measures your body fat. All of them, used properly, measure whether you're heading the right way.

Weight: use the average, not the reading

Body weight fluctuates by a kilo or two — sometimes more — for reasons unrelated to fat: gut contents, salt, stored carbohydrate with its water, menstrual cycle, recent training, temperature.

Hence the only correct way to use it:

Weigh yourself daily, under the same conditions — on waking, after the bathroom, unclothed, before eating or drinking — and look only at the seven-day average. You compare this week's average with the one from three weeks ago.

A real trend change takes two or three weeks to become visible. Any conclusion drawn from an individual reading is noise interpreted as signal.

And there's a frequent case that confuses everyone: when you start training, weight can rise while composition improves. That's normal, and it's why weight alone isn't enough.

The tape measure: the most underrated instrument

It's cheap, it doesn't drift out of calibration, and it gives information weight doesn't.

Waist, at navel height, relaxed, on waking, once a month. It's the most useful measure of all: it correlates with metabolic health better than weight or BMI, and several scientific societies now propose it as a routine clinical sign.

Hips, thigh and arm, also monthly, if you want to follow changes in shape.

The method rules matter more than the number: same anatomical point, same time, same tape tension, no bracing. Change the method and the number is no longer comparable.

Photos: the best record of slow change

The mirror lies because you consult it daily and change happens over months. A photo from twelve weeks ago doesn't lie.

For them to work they must be standardized: same place, same light, same time of day, same distance, same posture, same clothing. Front, side and back. Once a month.

Without that standardization you end up comparing window light with bathroom light, which is exactly what before-and-after advertising does.

Scales that estimate body fat

This is where precision matters, because they're very popular.

Bioimpedance scales estimate body composition by passing an imperceptible current through the body. The method is sensitive to hydration status, recent food, prior exercise and skin temperature, and its error for the absolute value is considerable: it can deviate several percentage points from reference methods.

Home scales also measure only through the feet, so the current mainly travels the lower body and the rest is estimated.

This doesn't make them useless. It makes them useless as an absolute number and acceptable as a trend, provided you always measure under the same conditions. If your scale says 22 %, you don't know your body fat. If it says 22 % for three months and then 20 % for another three, always measured the same way, that direction is probably real.

Worth adding something rarely mentioned: even DEXA, used as the reference, has its own error and varies between machines. The exact number people are looking for doesn't exist.

The three-instrument dashboard

The solution isn't finding the good instrument: it's cross-referencing three imperfect ones.

The combinations interpret themselves: stable weight with a falling waist is body recomposition, and it's good news the scale alone would have reported as failure. Falling weight with an unchanged waist suggests lean mass loss or simply water. Rising weight with a stable waist and better photos is what you want if you're gaining muscle.

Common mistakes

Weighing yourself once a week. It sounds reasonable and is worse than daily: that single reading can land on a retention day and contaminate the whole trend.

Switching instruments midway. A different scale, tape or app breaks the comparison.

Measuring under different conditions. After eating, dressed, at another hour. You introduce more variation than the real change you're trying to detect.

Drawing conclusions before three weeks. There's no trend with less data.

Confusing precision with accuracy. A decimal place on the display doesn't make it accurate.

When tracking does harm

Worth saying. If measuring generates anxiety, if a number ruins your day, if you weigh yourself several times a day, or if controlling your body starts occupying too much mental space, the answer isn't measuring better: it's stopping — and if that proves difficult, discussing it with a professional. Tracking is a tool, and a tool producing that effect is doing the opposite of its job.

Conclusion

No home instrument will give you your body fat percentage, and you don't need it. You need to know whether you're heading the right way, and three cheap measures used with a consistent method answer that.

Start this week: weigh yourself daily and record only the seven-day average, measure your waist today and note the date, and take the three photos. In twelve weeks you'll have a clear answer — which is exactly the time the scale alone would have had you spend arguing with noise.
