The Problem Isn't That You Know Too Little, It's That You Know Too Much
Introduction
You've been training a couple of years. You know what RIR means, you've tried three different routines, you listened to the podcast about fasting and the one debunking it, and you watched the video explaining that deep squats are dangerous and the one explaining that they aren't. And yet you're less clear than a year ago about what you should be doing on Tuesday.
It isn't a lack of information. It's the opposite, and it's a different problem requiring a different solution.
When everyone is right about something small, it's easy to lose sight of the big thing.
Why training content gets worse as it grows
There's a structural reason the volume of information grew without clarity increasing.
The basics have already been said. "Train three times a week, increase the load, eat enough protein and sleep" is true, boring, and won't sustain a channel. So content shifts toward what's left: the nuances.
And the nuances are real. Proximity to failure matters. Exercise order has an influence. Tempo has an effect. The problem is that they're presented with the same intensity as the fundamentals, and the listener has no way of knowing that one of those factors explains 40 % of the result and the other 2 %.
The outcome is predictable: someone optimizing their set tempo while sleeping six hours and training irregularly.
The difference between knowing and deciding
Here's the knot. Almost everything taught about training is descriptive: what periodization is, how hypertrophy works, what a given study says. Very little is decisional: given that you have four hours a week, this age and this injury history, what do you do?
Knowing more doesn't automatically produce better decisions, because each new piece arrives without its relative weight. It's like receiving a hundred facts about a car with nobody telling you which are the engine and which the air freshener.
What's missing isn't another fact. It's a hierarchy.
The cost of switching plans
There's a concrete, measurable effect of this excess, and it's probably what destroys the most progress among people who train seriously: changing programs before the program has had time to work.
Training adaptations are measured in months, not weeks. Changing routines resets the technical learning of the new exercises, and for several weeks performance on them rises through familiarization rather than real adaptation. If you switch every six weeks, you live permanently in that phase and mistake noise for progress.
Worse: without repetition, comparison is impossible. If you do different exercises every month, you have no way of knowing whether you're improving. And the log stops meaning anything.
Three signs you have too much information
You can explain concepts you don't apply. You know what undulating periodization is and your week has no structure.
You consume more than you execute. Your weekly hours of content exceed your hours of training.
Your doubt no longer changes anything. Wondering whether to rest two or three minutes between sets is a legitimate question; asking it while training irregularly is avoiding the decision that matters, dressed up as rigour.
What to do instead
1. Stop seeking new information for a month. Not because it's bad, but because you need time without input to execute what you already have. 2. Write your plan on one page. Days, exercises, sets, how you progress. If it doesn't fit on a page, it's too complex to sustain. 3. Commit to twelve weeks. That's the minimum for a program to show whether it works. 4. Rank your questions by impact. Before researching something, ask how much your result would change if you knew the answer. Most change very little. 5. Pick one source and stay. Not out of dogma, but because the internal coherence of a single source is worth more than the incoherent sum of ten.
Common mistakes
Confusing scepticism with paralysis. Questioning is fine; never deciding isn't rigour, it's avoidance.
Seeking certainty before acting. In training almost nothing is fully settled. You decide on partial evidence, always.
Treating all sources as equivalent. A meta-analysis and the opinion of someone with a good physique don't carry the same weight, however convincing the second sounds.
Reading this as "don't read anything". The point is hierarchy, not deliberate ignorance.
Switching plans because a better one appeared. Almost always it isn't better: it's new.
Conclusion
The intermediate trainee isn't stuck for lack of knowledge. They're stuck because they have too many pieces without a criterion to order them, and because that excess pushes them to change direction exactly when any direction would have started working.
Do one concrete thing this week: write your current plan on a single page and set a review date twelve weeks out. Until that date, any new idea you find goes on a list and doesn't get applied. You'll find half those ideas look irrelevant by the time you review them.
