That makes chess — and any discipline of prolonged concentration: poker, exam preparation, programming, analysis — a good laboratory for a skill almost nobody trains deliberately: cognitive stamina, the ability to hold the quality of your decisions after hours of deciding.

Before going on, two myths that usually accompany this topic are worth defusing.

The problem late in the game isn't that you don't know. It's that you can no longer sustain the level at which you know.

Two myths worth clearing away

"Chess players burn 6,000 calories in a tournament." That figure circulates widely and comes from highly questionable estimates. Increases in heart rate, blood pressure and respiration have indeed been measured in elite players at critical positions, and the physical stress of a long tournament is real. But the energy cost of intense thinking is modest: the brain consumes around 20 % of basal metabolism, and that proportion varies little with task difficulty.

"Chess makes you smarter." Meta-analyses on cognitive training are fairly consistent: improvements tend to be specific to the trained task and transfer poorly to general abilities. Chess makes you better at chess, improves your memory for chess positions, and probably trains useful analytical habits. Studies on transfer to academic performance show small effects that often disappear once the comparison group is properly controlled.

Neither being true doesn't diminish the value of playing. It just changes why it's worth doing.

What does get trained

Decision fatigue. As decisions accumulate, the tendency grows to pick the default option, the simplest or the most conservative. In chess this is clearly visible: late in the game there's less calculation and more playing "on intuition", which is where errors come in.

Controlling the past-error bias. After losing a piece, a player carries the frustration into the following moves and makes worse decisions. It's the same mechanism that lets one mistake in a presentation ruin the next ten minutes.

Sustained attention. Holding focus on a problem for hours, resisting mind-wandering, is a trainable skill through deliberate practice.

Pattern recognition. Chess expertise is largely explained by memory for thousands of configurations. It's specific, and it's an excellent model of how expert learning works in any field.

Strategies for holding your level

These work for a long game and equally for a demanding workday.

Decide your time allocation in advance. Players who manage the clock badly arrive at the end with little time and maximum fatigue: the worst combination. In any long task, reserving time for the final stretch is a decision made at the start.

Get up and move. Walking for a few minutes between moves or between blocks of work improves alertness. It's why many elite players pace around the hall.

Eat beforehand and steadily. Heavy meals cause drowsiness; prolonged fasting causes irritability and worse self-control. Stability beats tricks.

Have a reset ritual after mistakes. Two breaths with a long exhale, a reframing phrase — "new position, starting from zero" — and back to the analysis. Without a ritual, the error takes the following moves down with it.

Sleep. Sleep deprivation specifically degrades executive control and calculation. It's the variable with the biggest impact and the first one sacrificed before a tournament or an exam.

Train stamina the way you'd train any stamina: progressively longer study sessions, not just more intense ones. If your games last four hours and you never practice more than thirty minutes at a stretch, your level isn't the problem.

The physical part that does matter

Here's a recommendation with a good foundation and little glamour: regular aerobic exercise improves cognitive function and, especially, the capacity to sustain it.

The effects of exercise on attention and executive function are among the best documented in the cognition literature, and the mechanism — better cerebral perfusion, neurotrophic factors, better sleep — is plausible. For anyone competing in long mental activities, this isn't a supplement: it's specific preparation.

A reasonable scheme: 150 minutes a week of moderate activity, two strength sessions, and daily walking. Many elite players added physical training to their preparation precisely because of stamina in long tournaments.

And ergonomics count: a neck and back held in tension for hours end up affecting concentration. Chair, screen or board height, and breaks to move.

Common mistakes

Studying only what you enjoy. Openings instead of endgames, in chess; the comfortable instead of the weak, in any discipline.

Confusing hours with deliberate practice. Repeating blitz games without analyzing them isn't training.

Not reviewing losses. That's where nearly all the information is.

Stretching sessions to exhaustion. Studying badly while tired consolidates worse and demotivates.

Neglecting the body and expecting the mind to deliver. It's the mistake that costs most in the final hours.

Final thought

Chess won't make you smarter, and it's still one of the best available training grounds for something more concrete and more transferable than it seems: holding the quality of your decisions after hours of making them. If you compete at anything mental — or simply have long working days — the most effective lever isn't your study material: it's sleeping enough, moving daily, and having a ritual for returning to focus after every mistake.
