Why your body resists moving (and why it isn't a lack of willpower)
Introduction
There's a contradiction almost everyone lives and very few people can explain: we know exercise is one of the best things we can do for our health, and getting off the couch still takes enormous effort. The usual conclusion is moral — "I lack discipline" — and it usually arrives with guilt.
Paleoanthropologist Daniel Lieberman, who has spent decades studying how the human body evolved, offers in Exercised a far kinder and far more useful explanation: avoiding unnecessary effort isn't a flaw, it's exactly what the body learned to do in order to survive.
We were never designed to exercise. We were designed to move when it was necessary and rest when it wasn't.
Nobody ran for fun
In the hunter-gatherer societies studied by anthropologists, daily physical activity is considerable — several hours of walking, carrying and manual work — but it has one feature that changes everything: it's necessary. Nobody goes for a walk to burn calories; you walk because water, food or family are several kilometers away.
And when that activity ends, those same people rest. They don't do sit-ups in the evening. The idea of spending energy with no immediate payoff is, evolutionarily speaking, a rare luxury.
That explains the sense of resistance. For nearly all of the species' history, energy was scarce and wasting it was costly. The urge to sit down when you can sit down isn't modern laziness: it's a reasonable inheritance from an environment where saving calories was an advantage.
The mismatch
From this comes the central concept: mismatch diseases, problems that appear when a body shaped for one set of conditions lives in very different ones.
Today's mismatch has two mutually reinforcing sides:
Compulsory activity disappeared. Food is in the fridge, water comes out of the tap, and work happens sitting down. Activity that life used to impose now has to be produced voluntarily.
The urge to conserve didn't disappear. The mechanism pushing us to avoid unnecessary effort is fully intact, and now it operates in an environment with no compulsory effort to offset it.
The result is a historically new situation: for the first time, moving is a decision.
What this changes in practice
Understanding the origin of the problem has concrete consequences, and the first is the most important.
Stop treating it as a character flaw. If resistance to spending energy is a trait shared by the entire species, guilt explains nothing and helps no one. What works isn't more self-demand: it's changing the conditions.
Reintroduce necessity. If the body moves willingly when there's a reason, the strategy is to create real reasons: walk to places, run errands on foot, cycle to get somewhere, take the stairs because they're on your route. Movement built into life doesn't compete with willpower, because it requires no decision.
Use social commitment. In the societies Lieberman describes, activity is almost always collective. Today that's why walking groups and classes at fixed times work better than solo plans: they turn exercise into something you owe someone.
Make it enjoyable, not efficient. The "harder is better" logic collides head-on with a brain that avoids unnecessary expenditure. An activity you enjoy lasts years; one you hate lasts weeks.
Accept rest without guilt. Resting when there's nothing to do is part of the design too. The problem isn't the couch: it's the couch being the day's only option.
What evolution doesn't say
The limits of the argument are worth marking, because the evolutionary frame sometimes gets used to sell things that don't hold up.
It doesn't say we should imitate hunter-gatherers. Their life expectancy at birth was lower because of infant mortality, infections and accidents, not because they did something wrong about exercise. Copying their entire life isn't the goal and wouldn't be possible.
It doesn't say exercise is unnatural in a bad sense. Being culturally recent doesn't make it dispensable: it's how we replace a stimulus the environment stopped providing.
It doesn't prescribe a specific routine. There's no such thing as "the ancestral workout". The data on what and how much to do come from modern physiology and epidemiology, not from prehistory.
And not every mismatch claim is valid. Evolutionary reasoning is useful for understanding why something is hard, and weak as proof that a specific intervention works.
Common mistakes
Confusing an explanation with a permission slip. That the resistance is normal doesn't make it harmless: inactivity has real consequences.
Betting everything on motivation. That's precisely what the body's design works against.
Starting with the hardest option. Unpleasant effort confirms to the brain that spending energy is a bad idea.
Separating movement from life. The more it depends on a daily decision, the more fragile it is.
Counting only structured exercise. A good share of expenditure sits in everyday activity: walking, stairs, carrying things, moving around.
Final thought
The sense that your body resists moving isn't a personal defect: it's the inheritance of an organism that learned to conserve energy because survival depended on it. And that reading is more useful than guilt, because it points to where to intervene: not at your character, but at your circumstances. This week, instead of resolving to train more, pick one trip you currently make sitting down and make it on foot. It needs no willpower, because it needs no daily decision.
