That profile isn't a flaw: it's what lets you get up, concentrate and meet the day's demands. Someone with permanently low cortisol isn't relaxed; they're ill.

The problem isn't having cortisol, or even having it high occasionally. A spike before an exam, an argument or a hard workout is exactly what should happen. The problem is sustained exposure that prevents the system from returning to baseline, and above all the loss of the daily rhythm: when the curve flattens, rises at night or loses its morning peak, that's when the consequences appear.

12. Be wary of saliva cortisol tests that come with a treatment attached. Diagnosing a genuine cortisol disorder — Cushing's syndrome, adrenal insufficiency — is a medical matter requiring specific testing. So-called "adrenal fatigue" is not a recognized diagnosis, and systematic reviews have found no evidence supporting it.
